I’d like to express my deepest gratitude to all who have taught, supported and encouraged me throughout my four years at Dartmouth. Many thanks to the professors, staff members, and classmates who have defined my college experience. I am lucky to have found homes in supportive communities across campus, including Thayer, the Physics Department, the Student Wellness Center and the DOC. To my family, you shaped who I am today. To the graduating class of 2020, congratulations. I am continually inspired by your passion and intellect. I look forward to watching you continue to impact your communities and the world. - Ruthie Nordhoff
When I first met the quiet and seemingly shy Ruthie Nordhoff her sophomore year, I had no clue about the strong, brilliant, and determined leader that stood before me or the legacy she would leave.
This past fall, to help the Student Wellness Center with New Student Orientation and welcoming the Class of 2023, Ruthie got on stage in front of the entire first-year class and openly shared her story of struggle, having to ask for help, and finding community at Dartmouth. This is not an easy feat for anyone, but Ruthie wanted to make sure all incoming students knew that they belonged here, could struggle here, could ask for help, could find support and community, and could ultimately thrive here.
Ruthie is unique in her leadership. She leads by example. When she learns of a new concern or injustice, she actively dedicates her time to listen, learn, and get involved in direct ways to create positive change. As a Director of Movement Against Violence (MAV), facilitator for the Sexual Violence Prevention Project, volunteer Crooling for First-Year Trips, and Co-Founder for Access Dartmouth, Ruthie dedicated countless hours every week to mentor and educate her peers around sexual violence prevention, discrimination, mental health, accessibility, equity, and sustainability.
She volunteers her time and energy to make Dartmouth a better, safer, and more inclusive community by being an active member of the community and modeling the behavior she wants to see in others. She leads with integrity and it is my honor to present Ruthie Nordhoff with this Legacy Award.
