Karoshi, a Japanese term meaning "death from overwork," is a serious issue in Japan, where long working hours and high stress levels have led to numerous cases of fatal heart attacks, strokes, and even suicides. Addressing this problem, a new AI app named AI Life Quality has been introduced to help manage and reduce the risks associated with overwork.
Developed by the London-based startup syd.life, AI Life Quality uses large language models (LLMs) and natural language processing to analyze scientific data and provide personalized recommendations for improving life quality. The app has already analyzed over 1 million peer-reviewed papers to offer insights on reducing stress and improving mental health.
The app was initially tested with NHS staff in the UK, where it showed promising results:
- 16% reduction in anxiety
- 12% decrease in clinical depression
- 14% reduction in stress levels
These positive outcomes have led to a partnership with Koshida Corporation, one of Japan’s largest IT distributors. Over the next five years, Koshida plans to provide AI Life Quality to more than 7 million members, aiming to significantly reduce the incidence of karoshi.
While the ultimate solution to karoshi might be reducing working hours and improving labor conditions, the AI app offers a practical tool for managing stress and promoting mental well-being in the meantime. By leveraging AI technology, Japan hopes to mitigate the severe consequences of its demanding work culture.
