Assessments - Skills Checks are mini-assessments and will be give weekly or as a skill is completed. Quarterly assessments are given and are scored on a 4 - 3- 2 - 1 rating scale. These scores are used for the students' report cards.
Writing - correct manuscript and cursive formation will be stressed. Several pieces of writing are assessed this year. They are scored the same as the Literacy assessments. TDA (Text Dependent Analysis) writing is stressed and novels will be read by the students.
i-Ready Reading - a web-based computer program allows students to interact with reading.
In fourth grade, the children are instructed on reading skills that align with the PA Common Core requirements. Numerous activities will be utilized to assist students in the mastery of the targeted reading skill. Reading Literacy and Grammar takes place in the English Language Arts time block.
Please encourage your child to read nightly for 15 minutes.
Grading will be reported through rubrics with a 4-3-2-1 rating scale. Formal literacy assessments will occur each marking period and will be reported on the literacy report card.
The students will also work on TDAs (Text Dependent Analysis) as part of the English Language Arts and Literacy STEM class, producing several written pieces throughout the year.
Individualized Reading will take place in fourth grade in various forms based on the level of the student.
Using district-purchased Fountas & Pinnell benchmark assessments, the student will be placed at an instructional reading level and will be encouraged to select books within this range. Fourth graders generally are in the P - S range according to this scale. A Guided Reading Level will be placed on your child's report card.
Read Naturally, a reading fluency and comprehension program, may also be incorporated into the English Language Arts block time. This program places your child at his/ her instructional reading level.
RtII (Response to Intervention and Instruction) using small group instruction will focus on the targeted skill and additional stories may be selected and utilized during this time. This small group instruction will take place on various days and times dependent upon the reading specialist assigned to your child's targeted skill.
Children will participate in Progress Monitoring in my room monthly to ensure IEP goals are being assessed.
