Liberty Valley Intermediate School’s Curriculum Overview
Liberty Valley Intermediate School’s curriculum is aligned to the PA Core and Common Core Standards. The core curriculum includes English Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). The teams are departmentalized with grade 3 specializing in English Language Arts and Mathematics, and grades 4 and 5 concentrating in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Literacy Connections.
English Language Arts follows a structured literacy model that incorporates phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, Guided Reading, grammar, and writing. At this level, we emphasize the importance of reading to learn. Phonics is taught through the Orton-Gillingham (OG) methodology in grades 3 and 4. OG is a multi-sensory alphabetic-phonetic approach to teaching reading, spelling, and writing. It incorporates auditory, kinesthetic, and visual learning. It emphasizes how to read and spell rather than memorization. The intermediate level incorporates mode-specific and text-dependent writing.
Mathematics is taught through a balanced approach of teaching procedural and conceptual knowledge as well as math facts. The inquiry-based curriculum is designed to engage students to become mathematical thinkers and reasoners. Children learn that there is not just one way to solve a problem. They also connect their learning to concepts they have learned previously.
Science and Social Studies content is taught through literacy in Grade 3. At grades 4 and 5, Literacy Connections incorporates Science, Social Studies, and STEM.
Students have the opportunity for additional practice and/or enrichment through RTII (Response to Intervention and Instruction) time. Reading, Mathematics, and Writing are the areas that are emphasized through center-based work.
Our other courses are called Specials; these include Art, Library, Music, Physical Education, Spanish, and Technology. Band and Chorus are offered at grade 5.
