Damien Memorial, get ready for prom! With prom being around the corner, many students are excited about this thrilling experience. Juniors and Seniors will experience a night to remember if you have purchased a ticket. The venue will be in Sheraton Waikiki Ballrooms from 5:30pm to 9:30pm. The theme this year will be Wishing on the Stars, from the Disney movieP The Princess and the Frog.
Damien students have had a prom in Sheraton Ballrooms last year. But this year, student government managed to give Damien students the grand ballroom! The ballroom includes a bigger dance floor, more room for guests, and we will be having a new Dj: Hypeman Moses.
Ke Ali’i interviewed a student government member, Robynne Dona - to get the inside scoop of prom:So what is to be expected at this year's prom?" Robynne said, “Student government and the prom committee have lots of fun activities planned for students. There will also be good food, music, mini-games throughout the night, and a special prom program.”
Ke Ali’i also took the initiative to interview some students who are attending the ball. They were asked if they were excited for this years prom, many had said yes: "I’m excited to know what prom will be like this year. I hope it’s just as fun as last year.” Students were also excited for the theme being related to The Princess and the Frog. Most of the seniors have claimed that the move is their "favorite Disney movie." However, when asked about prom court, many students hesitated to answer; many mixed answers. But most said the couples that take place in our school will most likely win.
A little insight; the first proms were thrown in the 1800’s and were known as promades. They were intended for young men to show their newly found manners and social standing. It became a more casual custom in the 30’s and was also made for 21-22 year olds. In the 70’s, more schools began to integrate, but many white parents threw their own “white only” prom, and black parents did the same. It wasn’t until the mid 80’s when prom became a thing again. Thanks to movies like Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, and Heathers made the phrase “The best years of your life.”
It’s no doubt that you will make memories that you’ll remember for a lifetime. Prom is a time to dress up, dance, and socialize with your friends, and even new people. So if you have the opportunity to attend, do it!
