Damien Track Team Races to Victory
By: Ian Holmgren
Track and Field is a sport that consists of honing a person’s running, jumping, and throwing skills. It is a great sport to participate in, as people of all levels can join, and the events can range from slightly to extremely physically demanding. Unfortunately, the Damien Track and Field team isn’t in the spotlight very much compared to other sports. Although this is the case, the team is very strong and deserves some more attention. Ke Ali’i interviewed a student on the track team, Jayden Cabilao to get his perspective on the team and where he thinks it’s going to go this season.
Track is a great sport as it helps burn calories, build muscle, and improve metabolism. People in the sport can expect overall increased health and higher endurance when it comes to running. Track and Field like events are some of the oldest sporting events in human history. Unlike most other sports humans have been participating in competitive racing for thousands of years. The modern Track and Field formula however, came into view in the 19th century during the first modern olympics. Track can be a good sport for people taking other sports, for instance someone that is in soccer, may want to run with the track team in order to increase their endurance on the field. People that don’t typically do sports can also have a good time doing track, although at the higher levels the sport can get very competitive, it’s not necessary to treat it super seriously and just turning up to practice to increase physical health can be done.
Junior student Jayden Cabilao isn’t a stranger to competing in track and field. He joined the team when he was in 8th grade and has stuck with it ever since. He says his favorite part about running track is the team bond he feels with his teammates. He met a lot of new people through track, and really appreciates that aspect of showing up to practice not only to exercise, get better, and get ready to compete, but also just bond with some of his teammates. He gave a lot of information about track during the interview that made this article possible. Jayden is very dedicated to the sport and is a good representative for the track team with many years of experience and a lot of time invested into Track.

The season for track started February and will last until March. The team typically practices every day on weekdays, with track meets being on Fridays or saturdays. The track meets consist of competing against different schools in multiple different race categories, and multiple non-running activities. Some of the non-running activities include long jumps and high jumps. It is not necessary to compete in the nun-running activities to participate, and they are just for In the past, the team has not performed particularly well in recent years, but has a proud history. “I think that we can do even better this season,” says Jayden, who noted that the amount of people who joined track this season seems to be greater. With the new head coach, Coach Todd, and a lot of new people, the track team is on track to do well this year. Hopefully Jayden is right, and the team will be able to do a lot better this season.
Although the track team may have not gotten full attention in the past years, that may be changing for this spring. With a large number of members, a new head coach, the start of the season could not be looking better for the team. “I’m really looking forward to the next season,” said Jayden. The team itself didn’t do very well at all last season, but it looks like this season Damien is doing much better. Hopefully, this year the team can pull through and get a great season.
