The element of music has played a key role in the development of society since the earliest humans began hitting sticks against empty logs. It has not only been used for entertainment, but for religious and self expressive purposes as well. Playing music is even known to provide many health benefits, such as lowering anxiety and blood pressure! People who carry on this legacy of music-making can be seen in today’s popular singers, songwriters, and musicians, but also in the staff and students at Damien Memorial.
“I started playing around 2 years ago to the day…” says senior Nicholas Rios in regards to when he began to play the ukulele, his favorite instrument. Often called “Nick” by his peers, this student knows his way around the music industry. He is currently working for Roy Sakuma’s Ukulele Studio, a well-known school that teaches children and adults alike how to play the instrument. Nick also believes that others can benefit from learning to play any instrument, not just the ukulele, declaring that it's “one of the best ways to exercise the [...] brain.” There is even a lot of research to back this claim, and studies have shown that playing music regulates the flow of blood around the body. Not only does this reduce heart rate and lower cortisol(stress hormone) levels, playing music can increase serotonin and endorphin(hormones associated with positive feelings) levels in the brain. In short, playing an instrument could prove helpful in boosting one’s overall mood.
For over 60 years now, Damien has provided students with the means to express their passions. If any student has a knack for playing an instrument, there are many opportunities to showcase that talent here. When asked what the school offers in terms of music, Nick responded, “Well, we do have our band, [...] and I know there is another [music-related] club after school with Mr. Santa Cruz, and then the last way I would know is with the Music Ministry.” Nick is personally a part of the Music Ministry at Damien, and states that it gives students the opportunity to play almost any instrument that they are capable of. “If you have, like, a guitar, or a uke, or bass, even a piano [...] you can play along with the group, provided you have some experience” says Nick.
From the physical health benefits to the strong sense of community revolving around playing an instrument, there’s no secret that this activity can greatly elevate anybody’s lifestyle. Damien even provides multiple outlets to share a newfound interest or serious hobby, so anybody who wants to play an instrument has the ability to follow their aspirations. Who knows? It’s possible that anybody could uncover a lifelong passion within the creation of music, possibly leading to a healthier and more fulfilling life experience!
