Damien, it seem like Winter Ball quickly approached us! It was like a blink of an eye how fast time passed. Winterball was only open to Damien high school students and their guests who have already purchased a ticket. Ko’olau Ballrooms hosted this event on December 10 from 5PM to 10PM. Nobody was able to be late since the doors to the venue closed after a certain time so no one was allowed in after 5:45pm. This year's theme was "A Tale as Old as Time." Ke Ali'i interviewed Abigail Macaraeg, Damien's student body president to help us learn more information about Winter Ball.
This was the first time in three years that Damien's winter ball was held in a ballroom. Last year's winter ball was hosted in our school's very own gym. Damien rented out the largest room at the facility for us which is known as the grand ballroom. There was photo booths for professional photos by House of Photography and flip book booths runned by 808 Flipbooks. Abi’s advice regarding photos for an event like winter ball is “don't forget to take photos, photos allow you to preserve good memories.”
Student government was able to come up with this theme as a compromise for their Christmas and forest ideas. But also was inspired by Disney’s Beauty and the Beast film. Abi suggested wearing “something red, navy blue, gold, and maybe green” for anybody who wanted to fit the wintery woods theme.
The all-you-can-eat buffet was a main part of what you were paying for so don't skip out on the buffet. The menu had plenty of options to choose from. There were five choices of salad: Caesar, Bay Shrimp and Broccoli, Ko’olau Potato and Macaroni, Somen, and Vegetable Rotini Salad. The two Entrée choices were "Fresh Catch Local Style" and "Kalua Pork and Cabbage." For sides, there were baked rolls with butter, garden vegetable medley, garlic roasted potatoes, and white rice. Lastly for desserts, Ko’olau bread budding, the chef’s selection of cakes and pies, and Fresh Fruits.
The DJ for this year is DJ Kool E. He was also the DJ for last year's Junior and Senior Prom. Some last advice from Abi, “just have fun, don’t be afraid to go on the dance floor.”
