Shawn Sueoka is a young and ambitious athletic director with a hard-working mentality. He is excited to be the new athletic director for Damien Memorial School. Mr. Sueoka came from the University of Chaminade, where he recently served as event manger. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Honolulu, Hawaii in 2009. He also has a athletic background himself; unfortunately, he was not able to play a contact sport due to medical conditions, but he was still very good at paddling and golf, loving both sports trmendously. He has taken over the athletic position from Shawna Lau Kong, who served as Damien's athletic director back in 2021.
Shawn Sueoka is extremely excited about the opportunity that he has been presented with. Each day for him has been a learning experience, and every day is a chance to improve Damien's historic athletic program. Sueoka is very appreciative of his coworkers, saying “I get to work with some great colleagues and I get to help outstanding student athletes”. His most recent challenge was losing the athletic trainer Jill Stanford, who joined the team over at `Iolani. Shawn Sueoka relates that “Health and safety will always be our number one priority and we are actively looking to get a new athletic trainer in place soon.”
Mr. Sueoka is excited about the upcoming sports season and he knows the student athletes will embody the Damien standard of hard work. He says, “I am thrilled to see how our teams and student athletes do in competition and out of competition. I know our student athletes will represent Damien with pride and live up to the Viriliter Age motto.” His resume before coming to Damien is astounding; he has worked with big companies like Scoring Live, OC 16 TV, ESPN, Fox Sports, and has also worked with the LA Rams NFL team in their preseason game.
Shawn Sueoka is laying down foundational pieces for Damien's athletic program and he wants to build this program for the students, parents, faculty and also staff. He is willing to put in work every day, the Damien way. Throughout his career he has also always had appreciation for giving back to the community and to teach the next generation of students. He chose Damien because he saw it as a great opportunity to contribute his knowledge about sports to our young athletes. The traditions of Damien also brought his attention to the school and he believed it was a no-brainer for him. He plans to make the most of his opportunity and build this athletic program.
