Daemen College Tech Camps

Due to matters beyond our control, unfortunately Tech Camps will be cancelled for Summer 2020. We hope everyone has a happy and healthy summer and we look forward to seeing everyone next summer!

Join in the fun at Daemen College this summer as we explore the ever-evolving world of technology! By participating in our Tech Camps, we hope your child will become more confident using new technology and learn new skills they can use in the future.

Each camps is $165 which includes a daily snack and take home drawstring bag! For camps that require campers to bring their own flash drive, we will have some available for sale in case campers do not have a flash drive or they forget it at home.

All of our camps are taking registration via Eventbrite. If planning to pay by credit card, please select the "Registration & Online Payment" ticket type. 2020 Summer Camps

July 2020

Beginners Roblox: Game Design

July 6- July 10, 8:30am- 12pm

Ages 8 & Up

$165

Roblox is the largest social platform for play that allows kids to imagine, create, and play together in immersive 3D worlds. Roblox gives players a safe, moderated place to play and collaborate on creative projects. During this half-day camp, campers will see a new approach to the Roblox platform and become empowered to discover the underlying mechanics of game development in a collaborative environment. They will learn how to build and model in Roblox Studio, and have the chance to create their own Roblox worlds and games that they as well as their friends can play in.

A daily snack will be provided. No prior programming or coding experience is required. Campers will go home with a drawstring backpack. Please have your camper bring a flash drive to save their project files on, we will have some available for sale during online registration and also at the camp during check in if needed.

Space Explorers: Radio Controlled Cars

July 6- July 10, 1pm- 4:30pm

Ages 9 & Up

$165 (Additional Lab fee of $70 to help cover cost of car kit)

Ready your courageous robots for a mission to the moon, Mars, or beyond! Campers will construct remote-controlled models of a robotic rovers resembling the ones used to explore Mars, which at the end of the camp they get to take home. Once the build is complete, the race is on! Campers will use the remote control unit to survey uncharted terrain and race against each other to see which build model is the fastest. Learn about the history of Mars exploration, robotics in satellites, deep-space exploration, and the robots in popular space-related science fiction. This camp is for any camper who is fascinated by the prospects of being an astronaut, colonizing the moon, being the first human to land on Mars, or who just enjoys building! (Lab fee of $70 to help cover cost of kit)

A daily snack will be provided. Campers will go home with a drawstring backpack and their own RC Space kit that was used during the week.

Intro to Python

July 20- July 24, 8:30am-12pm

Ages 11 & Up

$165

In this computer programming camp, campers will be introduced to coding using cool graphics, games, and programs! Campers benefit from clean syntax and other streamlined attributes within Python that provide a new approach to learning and understanding programming. With Python, coders can often write code quicker, allowing them to produce project results in a shorter period of time. In this camp, campers learn new programming concepts and skills, develop logical thinking, and code impressive and entertaining projects!

A daily snack will be provided. Campers will go home with a drawstring backpack. Please have your camper bring a flash drive to save their project files on, we will have some available for sale during online registration and also at the camp during check in if needed.

3D Animation with Alice

July 20- July 24, 1pm- 4:30pm

Ages 10 & Up

Campers will learn how to create short 3D animated interactive games and movies, using a program called Alice. Alice is an innovative drag and drop block-based programming environment that makes it easy to create animations, build interactive narratives, or program simple games in 3D. Alice allows the camper to select from hundreds of pre-built objects and characters to use and program in their own animations.

Photo Editing & Design

July 27- July 31, 8:30am-12pm

Ages 10 & Up

Have you ever wanted to visit the Eiffel Tower? Or learn how to add cat ears or lightsabers to your photos? Campers will learn how to edit photos and draw their own designs using GIMP, a free image manipulation software. During the camp, campers will also have an opportunity to take new custom photos and edit them, as well as be introduced to some common photography terminology and best practices.

A daily snack will be provided. Campers will go home with a drawstring backpack. Please have your camper bring a flash drive to save their project files on, we will have some available for sale during online registration and also at the camp during check in if needed.

2D Game Creation with RPG Maker

July 27- July 31, 1pm- 4:30pm

Ages 9 & Up

Why just play video games when you could learn how to make them? During this half day camp, campers will learn about character and story design, 2D graphics, conditional branches, and many other skills necessary for them to make their own games with RPG Maker. Suitable for beginners but capable of making detailed games, this software encourages unlimited creativity. By then end of the week campers will have completely built their own playable RPG game.

No prior programming or coding experience is required. Campers will go home with a drawstring backpack and a daily snack will be provided. August 2020

Mini Computer: Microbit

August 3- August 7, 8:30am-12pm

Ages 9 & Up

$165 (Additional Lab fee of $15 to help cover cost of micro:bit kit)

This is where coding and engineering collide! Starting with a new type of hardware, then learning how a computer executes coded instructions. Put this together with object-oriented programming concepts and the campers will learn how to program the micro:bit, their own interactive pocket-sized computer. Campers will become familiar with programming concepts and electronics components, while building practical, hands-on electronics projects using the micro:bit. They will also learn coding in Microsoft MakeCode, a beginner-friendly block-based programming environment, as well as some very basic JavaScript. Some of the planned projects include: making a fidget cube and a rock paper scissors game. (Lab fee of $15 to help cover cost of micro:bit kit)

Creative Coding with Scratch

August 3- August 7, 1pm-4:30pm

Ages 8 & Up

Open your child’s eyes to the world of creative coding using Scratch, a program that helps kids visualize and then craft code. Aspiring coders can dive into creating animated stories and interactive experiences while learning essential programming concepts with Scratch. This drag and drop programming style allows campers to learn basic computational thinking while creating fun games and stories. If you have a child interested in learning to program Scratch is a great first platform. Campers will create several projects during this hands-on coding camp.

A daily snack will be provided. No prior programming or coding experience is required. Campers will go home with a drawstring backpack. Advanced Roblox: Game Scripting

August 10- August 14, 8:30am-12pm

Pre-Req: Our Beginners Roblox Camp or previous Roblox Studio experience

Ages 11 & Up

The possibilities of the world of Roblox are infinite and are only limited by one's own imagination. During this half-day camp, campers will learn how to build and script immersive experiences and games using LUA coding. From start to finish we'll be building and coding an obby (obstacle course): teleportation portals, traps, floating platforms and more! Campers will also have a chance to build and design their own game using the skills taught throughout the week.

Interested in having your camper stay for the full day?

If you camper stays for the full day, we will be providing supervision from 12pm-1pm between the end time and start time of the two camps. During this time it is recommended that your camper bring a packed lunch to eat. We'll also be playing videos during the break or depending on the number of campers (and on the weather) we'll be going outside so they can eat their lunch while getting some fresh air.
