Compelling images are vital to the success of our marketing efforts. Aesthetically consistent materials showcase our unique visual language. In order to appropriately tell the story of Daemen, we need to capture images that are representative of the entire campus population, not just random subsets. In order to do that, the Marketing and Communication division strives to engage a diverse set of student, faculty, and staff representatives, who are appropriately active in the campus community and will represent Daemen well when seen by the external community. Great care is taken to show life as it naturally appears- on campus and/or in actual approved off-campus internships or clinical.
Apparel worn is expected to be modern and consistent with the current look of community members and professionals, absent of any brand marks that could be seen as advertising for another product. Marketing and Communications has developed a guide to ensure proper attire is worn for photo sessions. Regular photography sessions are scheduled each academic year to correspond with seasons and to ensure that photography is current and fresh.
An authentic depiction
Through the collection of candid, posed, and campus imagery, the Daemen photo library should illustrate the university at this moment — reflecting the life of a present-day Wildcat. This photography should be both aspirational to incoming students and essential to the ongoing documentation of our history. We avoid images that feel overly posed, are unnatural, or signal an intention of selling a product.
Tools to be used
Photographers must be cognizant that photography will be used in a variety of formats and applications. The more raw images contain room around their main subjects, the more utility they provide for designers. When unable to leave this negative space, consider taking both a horizantal and vertical photo of the same subject so both can be used if needed.
Photos with lots of negative space are very versatile and can be used in array of aspect ratios.
Photos that are framed too tightly limit it use in campaigns where a variety of sizes are needed. An image like the one above would not be effective for a design team.
Curated
Photographs are organized by content and age, and are evaluated regularly. Students, technology, staff, and buildings should represent our present day campus culture. Marketing and Communications has employed a public SmugMug website that allows community members access to approved photos of campus, people, and events.
