About

Spectra is organizing this conference to provide opportunities for LGBTQ+ mathematicians both to celebrate achievements and to spark conversations of challenges in our community. This will be a space for attendees to share their research across all areas of mathematics (theoretical, applied, and math education) and to interact and create support networks within and across their research communities.

Spectra, the Association for LGBTQ+ Mathematicians, was conceived in the last ten years with its first official event in 2015—a panel discussion at the JMM in San Antonio. Since then, Spectra has organized events at various conferences to bring together people of the LGBTQ+ community. We are proud to organize its first official conference and create an intentional space for LGBTQ+ mathematicians. This will be an event where LGBTQ+ mathematicians at all career stages can interact and network with their peers. Further, it will facilitate discussions for creating better environments and promoting mathematics in our community.

Each day of this virtual conference will consist of:

Non-Discrimination Statement & Conduct

Spectra has a zero-tolerance policy for discrimination on the basis of gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, color, religion, age, national origin, veteran or service status, disability, any other protected category, or identity. We expect all participants to conduct themselves conscientiously and respectfully. We will not allow harassment or inappropriate behavior. Conference organizers have full discretion to enforce this policy.

The goal of this conference is solidarity and support, not uniformity. Participants will be sharing from their own experiences and we would ask that you refrain from generalizations or pushing others beyond their comfort. The goal of each talk or session is to share information, to learn about others, and to appreciate others' perspectives. We therefore need a rich diversity of ideas from all participants in order to do our best work together. In this spirit, we ask everyone to help make our space inclusive by being generous in their interactions. We ask that you avoid bringing in external distractions, but note that it is also entirely appropriate for you to take breaks, step away, or attend to something else as you need to, so long as you do so in a way that respects others.

We greatly appreciate your cooperation in making our conference a great one for everyone!

Recordings

We do not allow event participants to record, screenshot, photograph, or otherwise capture any part of this conference. For certain events, we may make official recordings, but we will always ask for consent beforehand. We strongly believe in the right to privacy and, as an LGBTQ+ conference, we are particularly sensitive to the safety of our members and participants. Even accidental infringement of this policy can endanger someone. We kindly ask for your cooperation, but note that we will remove anyone who violates this policy.
