Welcome to First Grade!

Hello! My name is Mrs. Manietta and I am a first grade teacher at Walsh Elementary School. I have been teaching first grade for 28 years. I look forward to another exciting school year!

First grade brings more responsibilities, different routines, a new teacher, and lots of friends! By the end of the year, you will be amazed by your child’s growth.

As you know, learning to read is a very important part of first grade. In addition to guided level reading, students will work with reading and writing which coincides with a phonics approach to learning. We will work with word chunks, identifying patterns, reading, writing, songs, repetition, blending, spelling and so much more! We will also focus on shared/self-selected reading, centers, math, science/social studies.

There will be opportunities for parents to get involved at school. We go on field trips and will have parties. Our classroom will also have volunteer opportunities. Take time to extend school into your home. Please become involved from home by asking your child about his or her day.

Each child will have a “Take Home Folder”. It is our communication link between home and school. When you send notes, forms or any other important papers to school, please label the envelope and put them in your child’s “Take Home Folder”. I will check each child’s folder daily. Please check your child’s folder daily for homework and notes as well.

I look forward to having close communication with parents. Be sure to look for the weekly newsletter, which communicates about our weekly curriculum and upcoming events.

Yours in Education,

Mrs. Jolene Manietta
