Rainbows Group

  • Rainbows Group offers weekly support for students experiencing grief or sadness due to painful situations. Such situations include the death of a parent or loved family member, divorce or separation, incarceration of a parent, or similar painful transitions. This is accomplished through the channels of peer support with nurturing adults (e.g. building social worker) to guide them, and a secure place to share their feelings.
  • Parents may call their child's respective social worker if interested in having their child attend Rainbows.

Dear Parent/Guardian,

I will starting our RAINBOWS weekly support groups for our students, fifth through eighth grade, who are living in single parent families, stepfamilies, or families that are going through painful transitions such as a death in the family.

When something significant happens in a family, the entire family is affected. Even though death, divorce or loss appears to be only grown-up problems, they have a profound effect on the children touched by these experiences. If a parent or loved one dies or a divorce occurs, not only do the parents grieve, the children do also. Because of their age and short life experience, children find it extremely difficult to verbalize their feelings of grief.

Children can learn to put those feelings into words, work through their grief, build a stronger sense of self-esteem, and begin to accept what has taken place in the family.

If your child is part of a single parent family, a stepfamily, has experienced the death of a loved family member, friend or sibling, or is struggling with a painful experience, this will be an opportunity for him/her to share with someone on the outside, what is happening on the inside.

We hope to assist your child in expressing and understanding his/her feelings, to feel acceptance for what has happened, and to feel a sense of belonging and love. Because we are unable to answer their questions or solve their problems, we will accomplish this through the channels of peer support with adult guidance, and a secure place to share their thoughts and feelings.

Enclosed is a Registration Form for your child. Please read it together with your child and fill it out to join, both you and your child must sign it, and return the form to the school office as soon as possible. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at (815) 7446166 X2503 or mgriffin@d88a.org .
