D64 Solo and Ensemble

Tuesday, February 13, 2024

What is it?

This event provides our students with an opportunity to prepare and perform an instrumental solo, or to participate as part of a chamber ensemble (typically 2-5 people). Participants are given a 6 minute time slot (10 for percussionists) to perform for a professional musician adjudicator who will also be able to provide real-time feedback specific to their instrument and ability.

Every student has access to solo music in their Tradition of Excellence books, which also include the piano part. The solos found in the books are only one option, and students may choose a different solo if they wish. Additional solo or ensemble music is available, just ask your band director!

Family and friends are invited and encouraged attend the performance, and and video/audio recording is permitted and encouraged (and please share with your band director!).

Why should students do this?

The ability to "stand and deliver" a speech or a presentation is a highly valued leadership skill.  A solo recital is all about learning how to prepare to deliver your best performance when all eyes are on you, as well as developing tremendous musical benefits. A successful solo performance requires the student to own their individual responsibility to make the music come alive. When students gain this insight as individuals, the entire band benefits.

How do I register my student?

The final day to register is January 13, 2024.

Registration is currently closed

Because of the complicated process for scheduling this event, we cannot make exceptions for late entries. If your student is not sure about performing, go ahead and fill out the form...it's easier to remove someone later than it is to add them in.
