Spelling Bee Overview

Bee = Spelling & Vocabulary

The D64 Bee will include both Spelling & Vocabulary Rounds, following the Scripps Format used at the Regional Competition.

Spelling Rounds:

The pronouncer will give the student a word. The student spells the word. For example:

pronouncer: Your word is 'help.'

Speller: H-E-L-P.

Judge: Correct.

Vocabulary Rounds:

The student will be asked to select the correct definition of a word during a vocabulary round. The pronouncer reads the word and 2 definitions. The student selects the correct definition. For Example:

Pronouncer: “What is porridge made from? A. fur, or B. grain.”

Speller: B. Grain.

Judge: Correct.

Study lists can be obtained by registering or emailing your Spelling Bee Coordinator.

  • Students should study words from all grade level lists (a 450 word total) in order to prepare for the school and District Spelling Bees.

  • Vocabulary Rounds will begin at the school level once the top 10 spellers have been established. The judges will announce at the start of each round whether it is a Spelling or Vocabulary Round. Students will be removed from the competition for incorrect answers during Spelling and Vocabulary Rounds.

  • Words of The Champions contains a total of 4,000 words, including the 450-word School Spelling Bee Study List. Words of The Champions is divided into One Bee, Two Bee and Three Bee difficulty levels--this is a great extension for spellers who've mastered the 450 words and hope to advance to the District or Regional Spelling Bees. Any word on this list may be asked in competitions taking place beyond the school level.

Note: although spelling bees begin with words from the study guide, they often end with words you haven't studied. All words are selected from Merriam-Webster Unabridged, the official dictionary of the Scripps National Spelling Bee http://unabridged.merriam-webster.com/
