Friday, August 12, 2022, about 3 hours after the final bell rang on the first day of school, a sea of white t-shirts formed outside of PHS, patiently waiting for the highly anticipated annual color dance. With a small look through the crowd, one could see friends reuniting after a long summer, eager-eyed freshmen, and the StuCo team running around making sure this dance would be as amazing as years before.
Slowly more students were let in and after about 30 minutes all of those once neat, white t-shirts were now stained with the rainbow. Music started and mosh pits began to form to songs like Love Sosa, Fireball, Family Ties and, many more. Mr. Howard rained down color packets and water balloons from above. After hours of moshing and singing, students ran to the ice cream truck brought in by the school.
At around 9 PM, everyone was looking for water with tired, raspy voices. And then with the literal strike of lighting in the distance, rain began pouring down. The music got turned up and colors dripped all over the front lawn. The party stayed going until 10 o’clock when teachers finally started herding students to the front of the school. I talked to Austin Jacobson, a Junior at Palisade. He had this to say about the color dance, “I really liked the music this year… and all the energy that was brought.” “And especially being a Junior, I felt like I knew a lot of people so it was really nice being able to see everyone again.” For a lot of people, coming back to school might be a bit nerve-racking, especially for Freshmen. I was also able to talk to Gracie Ehart, a freshman here at Palisade. “I had already made plenty of friends from volleyball and newspapers so I wasn’t super nervous.”
Overall the goal of the color dance every year is to bring the whole school together at the beginning of the year, and this year was another success.
