The Alex Murdaugh case has been an ongoing case since 2021, this is only to the murder of his son, Paul Murdaugh, and his wife, Maggie Murdaugh. Murdaugh was thought to be behind many other murders that he mysteriously was not interviewed for, while his brother randy Murduagh was the investigator in charge.
Alex Murdaugh, a former resident of the city of Atlanta, was found guilty of murdering his wife and son in October 2018 but just went to trial on March 1, 2023. The jury found Murdaugh guilty of two counts of malice murder, four counts of felony murder, and two counts of aggravated assault. Murdaugh allegedly acted in a jealous rage, killing his wife and son in their home. Police received a call from a neighbor who reported hearing gunshots and screaming coming from the Murdaugh residence. In an interview with Ingrid Caldera, she said when asked how she would have felt if her dad who covered up her problems killed her, “I mean I'd feel pretty messed over. Why after what he did for me would he pull something like that? I don’t think it’s ok, finding out he did something like that after 2-5 years is crazy. And not fair to the lives lost. I don’t find it fair he only got 30 to life instead of death row.”
At the trial, the prosecution offered an overwhelming amount of evidence against Murdaugh, including the testimony of several eyewitnesses who reported seeing the defendant at the scene of the crime. The defense argued that Murdaugh was not in his right mind at the time of the murders and had been struggling with mental health issues. However, the jury found this argument unconvincing and delivered a guilty verdict. Murdaugh was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. He is currently incarcerated at a state prison in Georgia.
