Trombones, guitars, trumpets, saxophones and of course a rhythm section. This Monday and Tuesday, the band held a Name That Tune Concert. Monday night was the band version concert, and Tuesday was the jazz band concert. This is the annual concert Palisade performs with Mt. Garfield Middle School 8th graders. “The purpose of the concert is so eighth graders understand that high schoolers aren’t so scary,” says band teacher Mr. Mason. This recruitment concert was a hit, lasting almost two hours with a full house on both nights. The goal was to make some connections with the kids and talk with parents about high school music. Mr. Mason was overall pleased with their performance, stating there have been various “irons in the fire” that have pulled different band students in different directions including playing the music for the musical Once Upon A Mattress last month and Solo and Ensemble. Rehearsals have taken 90 minutes per day between the two jazz bands these past few months in order to prepare for this performance. It’s also a good opportunity for high school students to see how far they’ve come after listening to the middle school. The band played Stevie Wonder, James Bond, and classic rock as well. “It was a good concert and I hope eighth graders got something out of it,” Mr. Mason says. Make sure to watch out for the band's next performances including a regional musical festival the band will be hosting next Monday and a dance on March 11th that the Jazz band is performing.
