“And the Oscar goes to” is a dream to hear for any aspiring filmmaker, actor, or person in movie production. The 2023 Oscar Nominations were recently released as the movie award season finally begins. Most of the nominees this year are from films that were big and commercially successful in the theaters and aren’t underground indie movies. These nominees are impressive and well-deserved. Everything Everywhere All At Once leads the awards with 11 nominations followed closely behind with All Quiet On The Western Front and The Banshees of Inisherin. All three of these films will compete for best picture along with other acclaimed films including Avatar: The Way of Water, Top Gun: Maverick, Elvis, The Fabelmans, Tar, Women Talking, and Triangle of Sadness. “In a way, the Oscars are kind of biased,” says sophomore Ema Babnic, “I wasn’t the biggest fan of Avatar: The Way Of Water and I don’t think it’s Oscar material.” Everyone loves a comeback story, and that’s exactly what The Oscars are doing this year. The Oscars aren’t as popular as they have been in the past, but perhaps with these more popular films against each other people will tune in to watch. Other comeback stories for this year’s film awards include Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All At Once) who was nominated for best-supporting actor. As a former child actor known for his performance in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Quan had given up on acting, but is now known for his stand-out role. Brendan Fraser has also made a comeback after he was brought down from his acting career due to health issues and personal struggles, but quickly gained redemption in his lead role in The Whale, which earned him a nomination for best actor. Jimmy Kimmel will be hosting the 95th Oscars on Sunday, March 12. You can televise it live on ABC.
