Behind every artist is a secret. Cate Blanchett perfectly portrays the role of an obsessive artist with a hidden past. The film follows Lydia Tar, an accomplished composer and conductor who finds her life starting to fall apart after this history is revealed. Being a famous musical icon, Tar abused multiple past students over the years. These events are finally revealed after one of these students commits suicide and blames it on Tar. Following this crisis, tragedy after tragedy occurs next when Tar is faced with her career going down the drain, losing her family, and the desire to abuse another new student. This movie follows Tar trying to push down her craving impulses with her dangerous addictions as her life falls apart. As a psychological drama, this movie perfectly portrayed the idea that accomplished people aren’t all what they seem. The visuals were great, Blanchett’s acting was spot on, and the storyline had a purpose. But parts of this film were dry and occasionally I lost interest. There were long scenes with lots of dialogue that were hard to follow. Tar has been nominated for multiple Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, and Best Actress. In all honest opinion, Blanchett deserves this award more than anyone else for her emotional, convincing, and psychotic behavior that is portrayed perfectly on the screen.
