On February 6th a 7.8 earthquake struck southern and central Turkey. Since then more and more have been happening. On Monday a 6.3 earthquake hit the same area devastated by earthquakes. Two weeks ago, the biggest earthquake struck, and smaller but still deadly ones have been following behind. 45,000 have died and thousands of buildings have fallen. Around 6 people were killed in the earthquake on Monday and 300 are injured. This caused a fresh wave of people on the cold streets of Aleppo and Latakia. More than 1 million people are hopeless in Turkey at the moment. Search and rescue teams are being overworked, the citizens are getting too cold out on the streets, and the number of deaths is just a guess at this point. People from all around the world have been donating things to the people of Turkey, including socks, blankets, warm clothing, food, water, etc… Inspections for damage are underway, but nobody knows how long that will take, and the people of Turkey don’t have a place to go. Student Lana Towner stated, “I feel bad, I wish there was something more we could do other than donate things.” There are 16 shelters in Turkey, but we don’t know if any have had any severe damage due to the earthquakes, even if all 16 were untouched, there’s only so much they can do for the 1 million people who are now homeless in Turkey. There’s honestly not a lot we can do, except for sending in donations and wishing Turkey the best. Hopefully, they can bounce back sooner than later and have a quick recovery, for the land and the people.
