Recently, the Ukrainian government has made some gains in the conflict that has been going on between Ukraine and Russia since 2014, with the Ukrainian military retaking several insurgent-held towns in the Donetsk region. This has been accompanied by a significant increase in the number of airstrikes conducted by the Ukrainian military, with the majority of these strikes targeting separatist forces.
The war has caused immense destruction and displacement of civilians, with some estimates suggesting that over 1.5 million Ukrainians have been forced to flee their homes. In recent months, there has been an increase in hostilities, with both sides exchanging artillery fire in the Donbas region. This has resulted in a further displacement of civilians, with many unable to return to their homes. Melanie Butcher said in an interview, ‘If a war were to happen here, I would be scared for those who I know that are over 18 and them being enlisted. While If I was forced to leave my home, I would rather live with my dad and brother in a better state for a better opportunity to live better. I do think that that War is useless.”
The conflict in Ukraine has taken a devastating toll on the country, especially the civilian population. Those displaced by the war have had to rely on aid and assistance from organizations such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Unfortunately, the situation is unlikely to improve in the near future, as there is still no political solution in sight. As a result, many people remain unable to return to their homes, with the situation unlikely to improve in the near future. Citizens of Ukraine can help by donating to organizations such as the UNHCR, which are providing aid and assistance to those affected by the conflict.
