Our Grand Junction combined swim team’s season is rapidly coming to an end, with most of our team competing in their final meets these last few weeks. The team has had a meet every weekend since we returned from winter break, and has been working hard to finish their season on a high. This past meet was located in Glenwood, Colorado, on Saturday the 28. “I think the team did pretty well, we are super close and the season is almost over so we were all very tired. We’ve also had nonstop meets with no breaks, but we are fighting until the end.” Says Mallory Cawood, a senior swimmer at Palisade. Cawood has been swimming since she was 8 or 9 with Maverick Aquatics and has been competing for GJHS Swim and Dive all four years of her high school career. She is often caught swimming the 2 free relays, 200 free, 100 fly, and 400 free relays. Her 200 free was a 2:14 and her 100 fly was a 1:09. “My season has been going pretty good, I had to get back a lot that I lost for not swimming for a while, but now it’s starting to pay off. We have a really big team this year so it's really fun. My favorite part of swimming is the community and the things it’s taught me about myself. It’s a very mental sport and I had to learn how my performance requires more than physical strength but mental.” Our incredible team has had a long and strenuous season, starting in mid-November and ending in early February. For half of the team, their season ended this weekend, and for some, it will end after their conference meets this Saturday, February 4. Mallory and a select few will be chosen to travel to the state competition. Their next meeting is at CMU this week on Friday and Saturday. It’s a prelim final meet so only the top 16 swimmers will make it back to compete on Saturday. Wish our incredible swimmers good luck at one of their final battles, and good job to our Bulldogs this season. We’ll see you next season, and good luck!
