Last week both boys and girls wrestling teams geared up and took off for regionals. After working hard and ultimately dominating their competitors the girl's team placed 1st as a team while our boys placed 4th. When asked to talk about regionals Laylah Casto replied “…I got up and pinned her and proceeded to pin the next girl to win.” Laylah has had her mind set on going to state all season and with all the hard work and determination she has reached her goal. Laylah was planning on graduating her junior year, but her love for the sport has kept her here all four years. We had two girls advance into state and 4 boys. Laylah Casto, Anaiah Guajardo, Keyton Young, Teagan Young, Tyrus DeSpain, and Trevin Brannon. Keyton and Teagan, the Young brothers both placed first in their bracket. Trevin and Tyrus both placed third. Junior Trevin Brannon said “When I knew I made it to state it was the happiest moment I have had in a long time. All I could think about was my grandfather and how happy he would have been.” For many people, regionals can be an emotional rollercoaster. Excitement is obviously what these young adults were feeling. The boy's team took 12 people to regionals and of the 12, 9 placed in the top 6. Next year the boys will be a very strong team, hopefully, they will take more than 4 to state next year. Continue to support our wrestlers as they take on the state tournament this week!
