Music’s biggest night had lots of historic wins. The 65th annual Grammys was held on Sunday as popular artists were awarded the prestigious golden gramophone in various categories. The award show is known to have some controversy after artists are awarded, with some listeners saying one artist deserved a certain award over another. Beyonce had nine nominations, most of the night, followed by Kendrick Lamar with eight, and Adele and Brandi Carlile with seven each. Multiple opinions have been said about the awards show including that it’s rigged. “It pushes down the opportunities and experiences for people of color in the industry by over exposing the ones that were given the opportunities through luck and being born into money,” says Teagan Brannan, a sophomore at Palisade. “Then using these people to say that people like them can be successful so then those with money don't have to help the less fortunate.” Although there is controversy among fans, the Grammys had a memorable night with Beyonce earning the most Grammys in history (32 in total). A celebration performance of 50 years of hip-hop was also showcased with performances from notable hip-hop artists including Ice-T, Queen Latifah, Lil Wayne, and many more. Yet the most surprising event of the evening was Bonnie Raitt winning Song of the Year with “Just Like That,” a soulful country tune. Not only was this very unexpected, but many people hadn’t even heard this song let alone known it was nominated. Considering the other nominees were very popular artists including Lizzo, Kendrick Lamar, and even Taylor Swift, this was an unexpected win in the industry. The night ended with Harry Styles winning the acclaimed Album of the Year award with his third album Harry’s House. Other notable wins from the evening include Samara Joy winning Best New Artist, Ozzy Osbourne winning Best Rock Album, Kendrick Lamar winning Best Rap Album, Willie Nelson winning Best Country Solo Performance, and many more.
