A beloved Canadian groundhog, Fred la Marmotte, was found dead on February 2nd before he could complete a North American tradition of predicting the onset of spring on Groundhog Day on Thursday the 8th.
In case you don’t know the North American tradition is that when a groundhog emerges from its burrows on this day and sees its shadow due to clear weather, it will retreat to its den and winter will go on for six more weeks; if it does not see its shadow because of cloudiness, spring will arrive early.
Although since the Canadian groundhog was not able to decide whether or not we have more weeks of chilly winter weather. So when it came for the groundhog to choose, the organizers of this tradition just chose to pick a kid in the crowd with a groundhog hat to predict whether or not they would have any more weeks of winter. Imagine having that kind of privilege. Would you do it? Well, Erica King got asked this same question and her response was, “Honestly I think I would have a lot of pressure on me to the point where I would definitely cry in front of everyone, but if it went well and I was pretty close to the prediction like the groundhog kind of, I guess I would have a good working yearly job.” So as said that would have been a lot of pressure, could you handle it? Also no matter how you measure, it's 6 more weeks of winter weather is the groundhog sees its shadow. So don't rush to start planting those fields for the groundhog predicts snow and frost to continue well into spring this year.
