A massive earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8, struck Southeastern Turkey and Northwestern Syria early Monday morning on February 6th. This earthquake has had a tremendous negative impact on the residents whose houses have been destroyed by the massive earthquake.
As many families have lost their homes, they were left with no other option but to sleep on the side of the streets where it's below-freezing temperatures. While others just slept in their cars, a car can only fit so many people, so big families can be hard to care for. Not to mention many people have been lost in the rubble. Although search and rescue have been looking for as many survivors as possible and with all the efforts put into finding as many people as they can, still tens of thousands of people are lost and unable to see their families.
Brooke Goode a sophomore at Palisade High School, said in an interview, “I feel like if my family and I were to be in this situation, I would feel upset because I can’t imagine having the home that we once called home be taken away from us just like that. I don’t know how I and my family would be able to stay on the streets or in our car. I can’t imagine what these people are going through right now.” When Brooke was asked, how would she feel about her family being separated by the amount of rubble there was she said, “I wouldn’t be able to remain calm. I would do anything it takes to find them.” At the moment there are many organizations to help these people make it through this rough time, like “Organizations like Doctors Without Borders, GlobalGiving, and Save the Children provide international humanitarian aid.”
