This week we got the pleasure of talking to one of the senior wrestling boys for our athlete of the week. Tyrus is a senior in high school and has been playing both wrestling and football all four years he has been here. Tyrus is a wrestler in the 126 lbs. class and has had a pretty decent season.
When we interviewed Tyrus we asked him overall how long has he been wrestling and why “I have been wrestling for 7 years I think. I don’t know, My dad kinda just put me into it and I have just enjoyed it since then.” We asked if he could tell us what he thought of his 4 years wrestling at Palisade, “Pretty good. We had a good season my sophomore year, and we haven't really had a bad season. This season our team is a little young so.” We asked Tyrus what his favorite part of wrestling would be, “Probably being around everyone. Like the community of wrestling is just awesome. Like you could talk to someone from across the mountain and know them just because of wrestling.” Tyrus’s hobbies outside of school are similar to what everyone likes to do, including hunting, fishing, camping, and mountain biking. When asked the question who his biggest wrestling inspiration as he answered, “I don’t really have an inspiration for wrestling I just do it.” We asked Tyrus if he could explain to us in his words his most significant wrestling accomplishments, “I won the Thomas Jefferson tournament last year. It was my first tournament I won in high school.” Advice Tyrus would give to someone who is thinking about wrestling is, “Just enjoy the suck. You know cutting weight and everything sucks, but it’s all worth it in the end.”
Tyrus DeSpain as a senior is ending off his high school career with a bang in wrestling. Let’s make sure we get to those tournaments and cheer him and the rest of the team on!
