Last Friday at 2 p.m. Grand Junction High School Students rallied a walkout over allegations of sexual assault from a current teacher. The person behind it all was an alumni of GJHS named Olivia Deines who was tired of still hearing complaints about the same teacher who sexually harassed and abused people she knew when she was a sophomore. After stating this, and many other serious allegations in a Tik tok under the account “Justice For GJHS Girls' ', the news spread and the rally was kickstarted. The students continued to post on social media to gain support and attention to the movement that they were fighting. That Friday afternoon the walkout took place. Students, alumni, and just people in the community came together to hold up signs on the grass outside to protest. The Grand Junction High School resource officer was also present during the time to make sure everything went alright. Junction students do have a reputation for planning protests. They’ve held a mask mandate protest in 2020, a sexual assault protest in the middle of a basketball game last year, and a protest for Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” act in 2022.
Lena Huynh, a freshman at Grand Junction High School said, “I personally didn't walk out, but I think it was a very cool thing to do, and important to show their stance on the issue. I think that it’s important for everyone to have a voice and it was cool to see a school back up the people who had been affected because of this by walking out.”
Clearly, the walkout was a successful way in getting the voices of the community finally heard.
