The Grand Junction girls Swim team competed in 2 meets this last weekend, the Delta Invitational, and the Gunnison Invitational. The girls traveled to Delta last Friday afternoon to compete in various events and relays against many teams around Colorado. All girls competed in at least 3 or 4 events to get their first times of the season and to see where their times match up to State times. The whole point of the girls season is to make it to State, so seeing where they are at right now is crucial to see where to improve and how to get faster. They did an incredible job racing as they took first place with over 100 points between them and the second-place winner, Fruita.
After their Delta Meet, the girls traveled the following morning to Gunnison to again compete in various relays and individual races. Again the girls were tested by different teams around Colorado, but this time reaching places like Centennial and Summit County. The meet still went well, although the girls placed 5th instead of their 1st place spot.
Leah Talbott, a freshman at Palisade said, “Friday's Delta meet was very good, we got first overall and I think we all think we did better on Friday mostly because we weren’t as tired as we were on Saturday. At the Gunnison meet, you could tell everyone was very tired, and I think people were kind of discouraged because it was a more challenging meet, so we weren’t really expecting that high of a score overall. I think we did a very good job considering the fact that it was a harder meet for most of us. Individually I beat some of my personal goals and records I had and I placed mostly in the top 5 for my individual events and I also did pretty good in the relays I competed in. I think my personal goal for this season is to go to State for something. Hopefully for an individual event, but anything like a relay is good too. I’m already beating the times that I’ve wanted to beat, so really I’m just excited to try and make it to State as a freshman. I think the season is going very well already, especially after we took that overall win this weekend, so I can’t wait to see the amount of meets we win in the future. Our team is incredibly supportive and we have great team spirit, so I think especially as our team grows and gets better together over the season, our meets will be even more successful then before and I’m just very excited to see where that gets us.”
Clearly it was a successful meet for all the girls this weekend. Their next meet is January 6th in Montrose, so wish them best of luck as they travel, and hope to see them compete soon at a home meet. Go Dogs!
