Sofia Grasso, a student at Grand Junction High School recently suffered from a spontaneous brain bleed and was life-flighted to Denver. Students and families from all around the valley have been working to raise money and support the Grasso family through this heartbreaking process. Sofia is still in Denver in recovery. Sofia is a junior and a member of the Grand Junction volleyball team. She has played throughout high school and rocks jersey number ten.
On January 15, 2023, a fundraising event titled “Serves for Sofia” was hosted for the community of the Grand Valley to join and support the Grassos, and help cover their medical expenses. 17 teams from around the Valley joined the volleyball tournament, each paying 30 dollars to participate, of which all funds were sent to the Grasso’s. Teams from not only the students of Grand Junction High, but other schools as well as parents and staff, and even players from out of town all showed up to play and support. T-shirts were sold at the tournament for ten dollars each to the crowd of supporters there to watch the games, and donate to Sofia and her family. Macy McComb, a junior at Grand Junction High School, was one of the organizers of this event. “Myself and my friend Annie had the idea of hosting the tournament, and we decided to go through our high school's student council to do it, and we’ve been planning it on our own. We were organizing sponsors and referees, and planning the volleyball tournament even though neither of us have played volleyball.” It's incredible to see the support students throughout the valley have, and how willing and happy they are to host a big event to help a peer in need. The event was a huge success, raising a little over 5,000 dollars for the Grasso’s. “It went super well and ran super smoothly, we were super happy about that,” Macy explained.
The winning team came from Montrose to play in the tournament. Their team's name was “Squirrely D” and was a group of four players. One of the players was on a national's team for beach volleyball. Thank you to all who came and supported the Grasso family at Serves for Sofia, and our incredible organizers and sponsors. It's amazing to see how an entire community can come together and support a family in need. Keep Sofia in your hopes and wish her a speedy recovery.
