Some consider it to be “this generation’s Chucky,” but I think it’s just an over-the-top horror movie that tried too hard. Following Gemma, a single career-focused toy designer whose life gets turned upside down when her niece is sent to live with her after the death of her parents, she quickly uses her engineering skills to create M3GAN (Model 3 Generative Android). The robot is so advanced it easily connects with her niece, helping her through her grief after her parents death that Gemma can’t provide because she has no experience in parenting. What did the gifted engineer think was going to happen when she created a robot so advanced to replace her? It’s a simple cause for disaster. The film shares how we can’t use distractions on children, but rather we have to raise them. Yes, this is an important lesson that every parent should already know but M3GAN didn’t deliver it for me. Along with the terrible CGI, I laughed more than I was scared. If this was a designated “comedy” movie then I would give this movie a different rating, but considering this is a horror movie I just can’t do that. Parts of this movie were entertaining, and parts of it were absurd. For example, I couldn’t (and still) get over the fact that the talking doll sang “Titanium” by David Guetta out of nowhere in the middle of the film. The best part about this movie was that it was only one hour and forty-two minutes so I didn’t have to see any more of M3GAN.
