Our Speech and Debate team at Palisade High School just had their first novice tournament last Saturday. They have been preparing since a little bit before October and they did great at their tournament. A novice tournament is more for the newcomers in speech and debate to show them the ropes and how to navigate through speech and debate and through the tournament. The novice tournament is not only for the newcomer but also for returning debaters to try out different categories to see if they like or are good in other sections of speech and debate.
We were able to interview a returning speech and debater Kiera Stephen who placed 1st in the poetry competition. We asked her how she thought the most recent tournament went, “Last tournament went pretty good it was our novice tournament, so it was more for people who have never done speech and debate before or for people who have done it and they wanted to try a new event to you know to do it in a setting where everybody is new at it so you know it is not unfair. But it went really well, we had a lot of teams doing duo value, which is actually an event that we created just for this tournament. I had done the poetry event which was really fun because I had never done that before. I was always a debater. I had never been an interp kid, so it was fun to try it, and then I took first.”
Knowing that our speech and debate team is bigger and better than last year, we should wish our team good luck in their tournaments. Our team is on its way to state so let's make sure they know we are all rooting for them!
