Palisade senior, Mikaela Buxton, is the female athlete of the week brought to you by Palisade Dino Mart. Mikaela plays volleyball. She has had an amazing season with a total of 15 blocks and 12 aces. Her hitting percentage is .054. She also has a total of 92 digs and 43 kills. Mikaela plays a little bit of both outside and right side. When asked how she got started into volleyball she said, “I have been playing volleyball since I was in 5th grade. I remember when I was in 5th grade and I decided I wanted to be involved in something. I heard there was a volleyball open gym, so I went and ended up loving it. I have been playing ever since.” As much physical and mental skill volleyball requires, Mikaela couldn’t do it by herself. Her biggest inspiration is Coach Wendy. Mikaela said, “She has been through it all and she knows everything. Being a senior, I just want to keep growing in my sport, even though it is my last year. Just to know that she is always there to support me and to teach me is very inspirational.” In her volleyball years, she has done some great things. When asked what her biggest accomplishment is she replied, “Last year I was out because of an injury, and so I went a whole year without doing anything. I came back this year and stepped up. I feel like that was a pretty good accomplishment.” Mikaela doesn’t plan to continue her volleyball career. She said, “I definitely have a lot of options. I am probably going to go to college for four years and see what happens after that.” Mikaela has had an amazing senior year at Palisade High School so far. She said, “I am going to miss the connection that I have with people. I have close connections and there is a chance they won’t last after high school. Having those people and knowing people are always there for you is pretty special.” After an incredible year for Mikaela and building relationships with players and coaches, she will soon be leaving her Palisade Bulldog years behind. Wish her luck as she finishes off strong.
