On January 6th Brazilian rioters broke through police barricades and gained entry to 3 government buildings. At least 1,200 protesters were detained once the officials controlled the buildings again. The protesters who ransacked the government buildings in the capital Brasilia seemed to be seeking military intervention. Officials say their reasoning was to either restore far-right Bolsonaro, the former president of Brazil to power or to get rid of their newly elected president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva also known as Lula. Bolsonaro’s rival. These protesters smashed windows, pushed over furniture, and smashed computers. Palisade student Kaci Hoskin stated, “I hope no one gets hurt. Whenever something like this happens in a country the people must be scared.” Once they were at the Supreme Court, they overturned the U-shaped table where justices convene, ripped doors off offices, and vandalized a statue outside the court. Most that have been detained are being questioned and could be charged. At this time Brazilian investigators are taking count of the damage done to everything ruined in the riots. As they interview people they are trying to find out how rioters seized the buildings. The situation had escalated so much to the point that the citizens started attacking the police. What’s happening in Brazil right now is being compared to when rioters in the U.S. entered Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021. Bolsonaro claimed he did not support these actions. Due to the police being understaffed, people basically let the rioters walk through the barricades. There's no telling what exactly is happening since there is so much going on at the moment and live updates are given frequently. Hopefully, everyone who was involved is safe.
