On Tuesday, a professional clean up crew visited a large homeless site in Grand Junction. The cleaners were escorted by the deputies and went to work in seven large illegal camps. Among the items were tents, furniture, bicycles, BBQs, large amounts of trash, human waste, and hazardous materials. They visited the camps several times and spoke with those residing in the camps to let them know that they should remove any personal belongings from the camp. Our deputies work hard to regulate these illegal camps, this includes checking the known camp locations, ensuring the welfare of the people living there, and providing them with the resources to help those in need. Student Carley Harris stated “I think it’s good that they’re picking up the homeless camps. It’s sad really when you think about the conditions these people live in. They’re so strong, I hope we can find a way to help them soon.” Yes, 7 cities were picked up and the people within them were offered help. There’s just not a lot we can do. More cities are probably in Junction due to the fact that we have 4000+ homeless people here, and only 2,555 beds available in our shelters. We need to figure out a way to help them. We could find a way to build another shelter but we just need to get our homeless population under control. About half a million people don’t have a home here in America. Instead of worrying about how many paper towels a grocery store has we have to start figuring out how to control our homeless population. Being without a home is no joke, these people struggle enough and already get treated horribly by others. We should find a way to help.
