Social Justice League
The Social Justice League is a group of D45 staff, community members, and teacher nominated 4th and 5th grade Student Leaders. These students were selected by their teachers as a result of their leadership skills and acts of kindness. The group currently meets monthly, via Zoom, to discuss their current topic, ability and ableism.
La Liga de la Justicia Social es un grupo de personal de D45, miembros de la comunidad y líderes estudiantiles nominados de 4o y 5o grado. Estos estudiantes fueron seleccionados por sus maestros como resultado de sus habilidades de liderazgo y actos de amabilidad. El grupo actualmente se reúne mensualmente, a través de Zoom, para discutir su tema actual, habilidad y capacidad.
Black History Month
Mr. Gallegos' 3rd grade TBE class at Schafer is learning about Black History Month AND about some famous Afrolatinos - students even created a Facebook for them! Afrolatinos are descendants from Africa AND Latin America; they speak Spanish and English. There are Afrolatinos in various parts of the world. Students were surprised to learn that Mariah Carey, Bruno Mars, and Carmelo Anthony (to name a few) are Afrolatinos!

Afrolatinos son descendientes de África Y Latinoamérica; ellos hablan español e inglés. Postcard Exchange
Ms. Wegner's class has joined an exciting postcard exchange with elementary schools around the country. Schools in each of the 50 states will be sharing facts about their school and state and then sending that postcard to the other 49 states in the group. We have been researching Illinois and will be mailing out our postcards next week. We have already received postcards from states as far away as Hawaii. This has been a great way to make personal connections, learn more about our country's geography and has encouraged the students to learn more about their own state.
La clase de la Sra. Wegner se ha unido a un emocionante intercambio de postales con escuelas primarias de todo el país. Las escuelas de cada uno de los 50 estados compartirán datos sobre su escuela y su estado y luego enviarán esa postal a los otros 49 estados del grupo. Hemos estado investigando Illinois y enviaremos nuestras postales la próxima semana. Ya hemos recibido postales de estados tan lejanos como Hawai. Esta ha sido una excelente manera de hacer conexiones personales, aprender más sobre la geografía de nuestro país y ha animado a los estudiantes a aprender más sobre su propio estado.
Veteran's Day
In honor of Veterans Day, Schafer's Student Council held an assembly to show appreciation to those who have served our country. We were fortunate enough to work with our local VFW and Schafer students to procure three amazing veterans to attend our assembly. One of the Schafer Scout Troops led the veterans to their honorary seats during a flag ceremony. We listened to the national anthem and then a handful of students read the Presidential Proclamation to the school. Our band performed a patriotic piece of music and then the Schafer students were able to ask the veterans questions. The assembly was a fantastic way to honor our veterans and teach our students about the hard work and sacrifice that our service members go through in order to protect us.
En honor al Día de los Veteranos, el Consejo Estudiantil de Schafer celebró una asamblea para mostrar agradecimiento a quienes han servido a nuestro país. Tuvimos la suerte de trabajar con nuestros estudiantes locales de VFW y Schafer para conseguir tres increíbles veteranos para asistir a nuestra asamblea. Una de las Tropas Scout Schafer llevó a los veteranos a sus asientos honoríficos durante una ceremonia de bandera. Escuchamos el himno nacional y luego un puñado de estudiantes leyeron la Proclamación Presidencial a la escuela. Nuestra banda tocó una pieza de música patriótica y luego los estudiantes de Schafer pudieron hacer preguntas a los veteranos. La asamblea fue una manera fantástica de honrar a nuestros veteranos y enseñar a nuestros estudiantes sobre el arduo trabajo y el sacrificio que atraviesan nuestros miembros del servicio para protegernos.
