Course Descriptions

Art

In 6th grade art, students will explore a variety of two and three-dimensional media. Students will develop artistic skills and habits, broaden aesthetic experiences, explore historical and contemporary artists, and unlock their creativity through individual artistic expression and problem solving. This course offers instruction of techniques and processes through a variety of media including drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, and more. Students will investigate their own concepts while putting into practice the National Visual Arts Standards: Creating, Presenting, Responding and Connecting.

2D Art

In 2D art, students will deepen their understanding of two-dimensional techniques and processes. Students will broaden artistic skills and habits, deepen aesthetic experiences, and unlock their natural creativity. Students will do this through individual and collaborative investigations of a variety of media, artists, and concepts. This course offers instruction in techniques and processes through charcoal, colored pencil, printmaking, collage, mixed media, watercolor, tempera, acrylic media and more. Students will investigate their own concepts while putting into practice the National Visual Arts Standards: Creating, Presenting, Responding and Connecting.

3D Art

In 3D art, students will deepen their understanding of three-dimensional techniques and processes. Students will further broaden artistic skills and habits, deepen aesthetic experiences, and unlock their natural creativity. Students will do this through individual and collaborative investigations of a variety of media, artists, and concepts. This course offers instruction in techniques and processes through clay, wood, wire, fiber, plaster media and more. Students will investigate their own concepts while putting into practice the National Visual Arts Standards: Creating, Presenting, Responding and Connecting.

Introduction to Drama

This is an upbeat class focused on creating community, understanding teamwork, developing confidence and honing one’s imagination. Students will learn how body language, posture, voice, and eye contact portray specific personalities and moods. Through theatre games and activities, students will learn to lose inhibitions and will gain trust in themselves as well as others. They will focus on the elements of theatrical character, movement, and plot. Overall, this course promotes theatre appreciation and develops presentational skills while reinforcing literacy standards.

Theatre: “More than Just a Stage”

This is an upbeat class focused on honing one’s creative expression through observation, concentration, and imagination. Through a variety of dramatic techniques and ensemble activities, students will learn how to step into a character and understand the importance of directing focus, intent, and motivation to create and sustain a believable character. Students will analyze how their character and plot choices influence the audience. Overall, this course develops verbal and nonverbal acting techniques and builds analytical skills while reinforcing literacy standards.

General Music

Ever want to play music? Students will create, perform, and experience music using a variety of instruments and technology. Students will study music genres such as pop, rock, country, jazz, and blues, as well as how movie music makes the scene. At the end of the course students will put together small ensembles of their choice for a final performance experience!

Music: Songwriting and Recording

Ever turn on the radio and want to hear your own songs? Interested in writing your own songs and producing your own music? In this class students will learn the basic techniques of various rock band instruments, how to write a song, how to perform together in a group, and how to record a finished song.
