What is SHIELD COVID testing? SHIELD testing is a quick, free saliva-based PCR test developed at the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign. Results are typically returned within 48 hours. The whole process takes minutes.

When is SHIELD Testing available? Starting August 30, SHIELD Testing will be available on a walk-in basis at each campus. Because the process is so fast, appointments are not necessary. Students should bring their school ID to the test site.

Grayslake Central:

  • Tuesdays: 7:30 am to 9:00 am

  • Thursdays: 8:00 am to 10:00 am

  • Athletic Trainers Office: Rm 1030 (Near the Dance gym)

Grayslake North:

  • Tuesdays: 7:30 am to 9:00 am

  • Thursdays: 8:00 am to 10:00 am

  • Athletic Trainers Office: Rm D108 (near the Field House)

Do not eat or drink anything 1 hour before testing Students may test during lunch but before they eat, as test results are inaccurate if the sample is taken within an hour after eating. Students may test during passing periods, and a pass will be given if the class period starts.

How does it work? Testers pick up a tube from the testing site, deposit saliva, and screw on the top. The sample is placed in a box to be sent to the lab. Testing can be completed in a few minutes, and typical test results are expected within 24 hours (but could take up to 48 hours). In the case of a positive test, the family of the student and the school will be notified. Families will be given access to the Point N Click System to get online test results.

Who should get tested and how often? Any student or staff member may test as needed, regardless of vaccination status. We recommend that anyone not vaccinated test each week. In addition, athletes in high-contact sports should test weekly.

NOTE: Taking a SHIELD Test does NOT mean you have to quarantine. Anyone can test any time for any reason, and hundreds at District 127 already have. Our positive rate is under 1%, and only those few positive cases have had to quarantine.

Permissions: At this time, students may voluntarily test as needed. If you DO NOT want your student to have access to the SHIELD testing program at any time, please fill out the form linked below and return to the main office or nurse’s office at your student’s campus. We will remove your student’s information from the system, and they will not be able to test at school.
