We will not be having class on Tuesday March 4. I'd like you to answer the following questions based on your listening of Episode 5 (both Part 1 and 2) of the 1619 Podcast. Please submit your answers to the following 4 questions as a single pdf file to Canvas by 11:59 pm Tuesday March 4 to get attendance credit for that day. If you don't submit you will be marked absent. There is no special format required other than to please number your answers.
1. Where does the expression "40 Acres and a Mule" come from? What does it mean? Did anyone actually get 40 acres a mule? Why or why not? Have you heard this expression lately? If you have, when and who said it?
2. What is your impression of June and Angie Provost, in particular their ability to farm? As we hear in this podcast, they end up losing their farm. Describe the sequence of events that lead to this. Does this seem like a reasonable outcome? Why or why not?
3. You might remember the Dick Gregory quote from our Midterm. He said, "Down South, white folks don't care how close I get as long as I don't get too big. Up North, white folks don't care how big I get as long as I don't get too close." Describe two examples from this episode that support that characterization about the south. (Note that the Provosts and their farm are in Louisiana which is considered to be in the south.)
4. What two additional facts or events that came up in Episode 5 stood out to you, and why? Please make these different than anything that came up in 1 - 3.
We will discuss the above as a part of our online class on Weds March 5 (which will meet as planned).
