What is a mission patch?

A mission patch is worn by astronauts on their space suits and depicts the mission name and logo. They generally have an image that depicts the mission and sometimes also have the names of the astronauts. They have been worn by NASA astronauts since 1965!

Design a mission patch

Design your own mission patch for a future mission. It could be a real upcoming mission or one you make up yourself. Maybe you want to send a crew to Mars or all the way out to Pluto! The sky is not the limit!

Submit your mission patch by noon on July 1st

To be entered to win you can:

  • Email us your mission patch to planet@d.umn.edu with "Giveaway" in the subject line

  • Post your mission patch to Facebook and tag us @UMDPlanetarium

  • Post your mission patch to Instagram and tag us @umd_planetarium

Please include your name in your post/email or written on/near your mission patch.

Terms and Conditions

One entry per person.

Limited to the Duluth/Superior area, unless you are willing to travel to Duluth to collect the prize.

Winners will be randomly drawn on Facebook Live on July 1st. You do not need to be present to win. We will contact both winners on July 2nd through either email, Facebook message, or Instagram message depending on how your entry was submitted. You then have 48 hours to respond. If you do not respond, you forfeit your prize and we will draw a new winner.
