Jacob Jonker holds a Master's Degree in Guitar Performance from the University of Minnesota - Minneapolis, where he studied under Jeffrey Van. Prior to that he studied under Joseph Hagedorn at the University of Wisconsin - River Falls. While in school Jacob received first prize from the Schubert Club and second prize from the Thursday Musical Scholarship Competitions. He joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota - Duluth in 2008, and the University of Wisconsin - Superior in 2017.
Jacob has given multiple performances for the Minnesota Guitar Society both as a "Local Artist Series" recitalist and as part of their annual "Guitarathon" concert. In addition to solo recitals, he has performed in concert with the Twin Ports Wind Orchestra, UMD Chamber Singers, Lyric Opera of the North, and numerous other respected local musicians. He has also received grants from the Duluth Homegrown Music Festival and the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council.
Jacob has received Suzuki pedagogy training through the Suzuki Association of the Americas from David Madsen, William Kossler and Andrea Cannon, and is committed to fostering a high standard of character and musicianship in all his students. His students have had the opportunity to play in Masterclass with top performers including William Kanengiser, Jason Vieaux, and the Brasil Guitar Duo, and regularly attend Suzuki Institutes and the International Conference in Minneapolis.
