This week in Science class we...

• Students took a formative assessment focused on just reasoning. The highest score that could be achieved on this practice is a 3. This formative was reviewed the next day.

• Began preparing for the summative assessment by learning about the Bristol Bay ecosystem. Students will spend two days focused on learning about the role of salmon in Bristol Bay along with the proposed Pebble project for that location. Students will be applying what we have learned about ecosystems throughout this unit to the ecosystem of Bristol Bay.

Next week students will take their summative assessment for Ecology which will include evidence and reasoning. White day students will have their assessment Tuesday and red day students on Wednesday. 

If students are looking for ways to prepare they have a review sheet (pink) with prompts about each topic. Additionally, students can come and review/ask questions during PM connect everyday or a review session during C3 next Tuesday.

• This week, students identified their core values. They participated in multiple activities to help them determine what is most important in their relationships and what values help guide them in making decisions. 

• Students also went over sexual health terminology and talked a lot about teen relationships. 

• Students practiced communication skills, along with refusal skills and delay tactics.

This week students wrapped up their second unit by spending time in their book clubs. They created group recommendations for a library display, and you can see the final display at the top of the page!

White day students got started on our Romeo and Juliet unit, and red day students will dive in next week. Please help your student meet reading deadlines by talking to them about their due dates. They have all their due dates on their bookmarks!

Social Studies

This week in social studies, we moved from the Neolithic Revolution to the first civilization in Mesopotamia. Students made a historical map of the region and time period and looked at what makes a civilization. We also studied Hammurabi’s Code, the world’s first law code. Students are now writing a LEAEAF paragraph explaining how Hammurabi’s laws helped Babylon become a powerful city. Their paragraphs are due after the weekend. 

Recommendation: Human Nova– a five-part documentary series that follows Homo sapiens on their journey around the world and their interactions with other humans.
