Hangouts/Meet

Hangouts Meet is Google's videoconferencing tool.

It's what we used in Advisory when Adam presented.

  • Click the link your teacher gives you to join a Meet (it may be in an email or also in your calendar).

  • You can use any device (Chromebook, computer, tablet, smartphone).

  • If it is your first time entering a Meet, you will have to "Allow" the microphone and camera (on a computer, each will pop-up in the top-left side of the screen— click Allow).

  • You’re not automatically in the meeting; you have to click the Join Now button to finalize the process.

  • Once you join, please mute yourself. You do this by hovering at the bottom of the screen and a white bar will pop up. Click the microphone and it will make it red and put a line through it, indicating you are muted.

  • If you don't wish to be seen click the icon of the camera and this will shut off your webcam.

  • You can also use the chat feature in Hangouts Meet by clicking the Chat icon on the upper right.

  • Finally, think about what's behind you if you have your camera turned on.

Seeing everyone in a Hangouts Meet

The district has pushed out an improvement to Hangouts Meet so you can now see everyone in the call in tile mode, rather than just four people.

But...in order to get it working, you need to restart your Chromebook*. You can do this by pressing the refresh key and power button at the same time (see screenshot below)

Please do that RIGHT NOW (it only takes a minute)-- you'll be glad you did at your next Hangouts Meet! It is good practice to occasionally restart, anyway, because other important updates don't take effect until you do so.

The next time you join a Hangouts Meet, you will then see a 3 x 3 grid icon that allows you to see everyone tiled on the screen.

*If you are using a device other than a Chromebook for Hangouts Meet, quit and then reopen Chrome.
