Cheryl Childs, MEd Coordinator of Advanced Academics
Cheryl began her teaching career as a substitute at Hamblen Elementary in 1999. Soon after graduating from University of Houston, she began teaching 5th grade Math, Science and Social Studies. It was a few years later when she became a 4th grade self-contained teacher in addition to Team Leader. Over the years, Cheryl wrote curriculum for all content areas and provided professional development for all grade levels districtwide. As a mentor and lead teacher for many years, she transitioned from the classroom to become the Math specialist at Hamblen as well as the AVID campus coordinator. In 2017, Cheryl was hired as a staff developer for AVID where she spent time training teachers on the AVID systems nationwide. In 2018, Cheryl moved to Anthony Aguirre Jr. High to work as the AVID elective teacher/ coordinator to continue the AVID demonstration school’s philosophy of ALL students can be successful. In 2021, her title changed to Advanced Academics Coordinator, but her passion for serving and supporting students has remained the same. Cheryl received her Bachelor’s Degree from University of Houston and Master’s Degree from University of Texas-Arlington.
