Dear Parents and Caregivers
Please find the final details and key rules for the upcoming NCIS Secondary Surfing 2025 competition. Mr Ross will be there this year, with the CVAS Marquee set up and is one of the judges.
I’ve placed a copy of the official rules and guidlines from NCIS below this summary
Date: Monday 27 October 2025
Location: Sawtell Main Beach
Time: The day runs from approximately 7:30 am – 3:30 pm (time is dependent on conditions).
First Heat: The first heat begins at 8:00 am. Please ensure your child arrives before this time to prepare.
Draw/Schedule: The competition draw and schedule is available at : https://liveheats.com/events/424262
Sun Safety: Students must apply sunscreen regularly, seek shade when possible, and stay hydrated throughout the day.
Heat Information:
Surfers should check the competition draw for their heat time and coloured rash shirt.
Rash shirts must be collected before your child's heat and returned immediately afterward to the judging tent.
Surfers must not surf in their coloured rash shirt before or after their heat.
After the final hooter, surfers must paddle in and lie down on any waves to allow the next heat to start.
Heat Duration: Each heat lasts 20 minutes.
Timing: Surfers are responsible for being ready on time, as heats will not be delayed.
Signals: Coloured signs near the judging tent will indicate the heat status:
Green: Heat on
Yellow: Heat on, less than 5 minutes remaining
Red: Heat off
Between Heats: When not competing, surfers must stay outside the competition area and away from waves being ridden by others. Interfering with the competition can result in elimination.
Scoring: Each wave is scored out of 10 points.
Total Score: A surfer's two highest-scoring waves are combined for their total heat score (maximum of 20 points).
Criteria: Surfers are judged based on elements including commitment, degree of difficulty, innovative and progressive manoeuvres, variety and combination of major manoeuvres, and speed, power, and flow.
Interference: "Dropping in" on or interfering with another surfer will result in the removal of the surfer's best-scoring wave for each offence.
Convenor: Ben Andrews from BDC will be convening the day.
Canteen: The Surf Club has a café on site.
Presentation: Medals will be presented as each final is completed.
Please ensure your child is aware of the rules, especially those regarding sun safety and heat timing.
Kind regards
Mark Ross
