Fiction- Story Elements and Summary
Students will receive a login for this free program. Zearn follows our math program lesson by lesson and is very helpful for review.
One of the best ways to get students improve in both their reading and writing skills is for them to write about their reading. They can write summaries, opinion pieces, or answer questions such as:
What predictions can I make before reading the next chapter?
How does this connect to what I already know or have experienced?
How has the character changed over time?
What was the author's purpose in writing this piece?
Students can also work on writing informational, narrative, and opinion pieces at home. Below are the checklists students use throughout the writing process at school. Students can use the same checklists as we use in class to help them remember components of each genre.
You can write a story about:
a time you were scared/joyful/nervous
the first time you lost a tooth/went on a rollercoaster
an important moment in your life
a special moment you had in your favorite place
a time you shared with an important person in your life
You can give information about:
People
Places
Things
Hobbies
Animals
You can give reasons why:
you think something is the best
why something should be changed at home or at school
somebody should go somewhere or read something...
