Unit Objectives
Unit Objectives
By the end of this unit, you will be able to:
- Draw free body diagrams (force diagrams) for systems of one or two objects
- Use Newton’s first law to predict the motion of an object that feels no force
- Use Newton’s second law to solve one- and two-body force problems that may include:
• Inclines • Friction
• Tension • Gravity
• Normal force • Forces at angles
- Use Newton’s third law to identify action-reaction pairs
Over the course of this unit, you will:
- Graph the force on an object as a function of the acceleration it experiences
- Predict the amount of weight hanging from a pulley to keep a system in equilibrium
Prerequisite skills: Understanding of position, velocity, and acceleration; mathematical reasoning; finding components of vectors; separation of motion in perpendicular directions
