Unit Objectives

By the end of this unit, you will be able to:

  • Draw free body diagrams (force diagrams) for systems of one or two objects
  • Use Newton’s first law to predict the motion of an object that feels no force
  • Use Newton’s second law to solve one- and two-body force problems that may include:

• Inclines • Friction

• Tension • Gravity

• Normal force • Forces at angles

  • Use Newton’s third law to identify action-reaction pairs

Over the course of this unit, you will:

  • Graph the force on an object as a function of the acceleration it experiences
  • Predict the amount of weight hanging from a pulley to keep a system in equilibrium

Prerequisite skills: Understanding of position, velocity, and acceleration; mathematical reasoning; finding components of vectors; separation of motion in perpendicular directions
