You will be eligible for Tryouts and place in the Science Bowl Team only if you sign up.
No makeups available for Tryouts.
Results will be posted at brunch outside room 9 on Oct 2nd. Email will also be sent to students and parents of selected students.
Only selected students will be informed via email.

Practice at School: Both teams are required to attend practice session on once a week Monday(3:15 to 4:00 pm). In these meetings study material will be provided and practice rounds will be held.
Practice at home: Teams will meet once a week for practice with parent coach and High school mentor in their own time.

Regional Competition Location: Virtual/ in person participation will be as per CUSD policies on Saturday, Feb 24, 2024 and if the district does not approve then we will not be able to participate.

"We are planning to hold the event in-person at SLAC but it is quite possible that we will switch to a virtual format in consideration of COVID regulations. We will share updates as we learn more."

Team Selection:
Topics tested during Tryouts: Middle school Earth and space Science, Life Science, Physical Science (Chemistry and Physics), and Energy.
Try Out Test will be timed so as many questions you can complete in half hour.
Team members Selection: Team will be selected based on tryout test, and teacher recommendation.
Behavior Expectation: Two "N" or one "U" in conduct or citizenship on student's report card will result in disqualifying from the team.
Team member responsibility should be work and coordinate with team independently. They are responsible to follow through and attend practices as coordinated by parents co-coach and High school mentors.
Results will be communicated via emailed if selected.
Two teams A and B: Only 10 students will be selected. Two teams A and B: five students each.
Participation at regionals: Only Team 1 will participate in Science Bowl regionals. Participation of Team 2 is based on space availability.
Team formed will be tentative. Final team will be decided in January based on student's commitment to the team. Team members can be switched between teams 1 and 2.
Attending Practices: Once you have been selected on a team, missing more than two practices will disqualify you from staying on the team.

Team Structure:
Science Bowl Competition Knowledge: Knowledge tested during the competition is based on advance middle school curriculum.
- Each team consists of four or five students (only four playing at a time).
- Specialization for science topics: Each Team should have a student specializing in one of these:
Life science,
Earth and space science,
Physics
Chemistry
Energy (ALL)
Math (ALL)
Competition Rules: Team members are responsible for going over the rules of Science Bowl. In case of doubt check with Mrs. Walia.
It is critical to understand the rules of the competition and how scoring works.

Questions are either multiple choice or short answers.
Questions are read only once.
There are toss up and bonus questions.
Toss up questions are individual.
Bonus questions are answered as team by team captain only.
Bonus questions are more advance and high school level.
